I don't know if anyone else will have listened to Dream Theater's new album yet...

...but I have, and, wait a second, spoilers ahead for those who want to go into the album without any outside influence (however few that may be). I also don't know how to force a jump to happen, so here's some random text:

I love the McLaren F1.

Okay, now that I got that out of the way, I find it pretty bland. "Illumination Theory" is pretty cool, I'll give them that, but otherwise, I don't feel like there's much new here. I don't feel like there's any experimentation. It pretty much has me thinking once again that Between The Buried and Me does Dream Theater better than Dream Theater does themselves these days.

If you like experimentation, a few years back some of the guys from Dream hearwe and Alex Lifeson (from Rush) did an album or two called Liquid Tension Experiment. I think you'll find that a bit more satisfying.

Alex Lifeson wasn't on LTE, it was Petrucci. Nevertheless, I've got both LTE albums, they're quite awesome.

Without Portnoy, it just doesn't seem the same to me. Yes, Mangini is amazing. But modern prog rock was more my style in the LTE days, so now I'm just reduced to name loyalty.

My bad! I think I was getting my King Crimson members mixed up. Tony Levin

I kind of agree. Black Clouds & Silver Linings (Portnoy's last album) was still hit-or-miss, but there was some experimentation. The only problem was that album was horribly cheesy lyrically (which is too bad, because "The Count of Tuscany" is really awesome if you throw the lyrics away). A Dramatic Turn of Events still held interest, although you could tell some of the experimentation was gone.

I guess you could say I'm reduced to name loyalty, although I'll still argue heavily that they had early masterpieces ( Awake , especially).

That will likely be the case for me (especially if their tour comes here this year — oddly I have still yet to see them live).

They opened for Iron Maiden 2 tours ago - I wasn't looking forward to hearing DT play b/c I knew a tool in college who praised DT as god's music of choice.

We arrived early and were "forced" to listen and I've never been so shocked before in my life. They were amazing - been in love ever since.

Can't wait for tomorrow.
